On a sunny September morning, the kind doctor who told Mr. Sesemann to send Heidi home paid Clara a visit. The doctor had fallen on hard times. His only daughter had died and he was having trouble finding joy in life. He had trouble sleeping and eating. He would go for long walks and think about his daughter. His smile seemed gone forever.

"I've come to talk to you about Clara's trip," said Dr. Classen. "I strongly advise you to cancel it. She won't be able to handle the journey. It would be too dangerous for her."
