The municipal theater was a small venue: one hundred seats arranged in a semicircle, a stage barely twenty yards long. The orchestra playing that night consisted of as many musicians. The conductor greeted the audience, who applauded, and the musicians entered together stage right. My heart began beating faster; I could feel it pounding in my temples. It took less than a minute for everyone to take their seat, too quickly to make out the silhouette I was seeking out.
