My mother was waiting for us on the train station platform. I'd tried my best to put Sophie at ease, but no matter how many times I repeated on the way there that she didn't need to be afraid of any judgment on my mother's part, the thought of meeting my mother terrified her. She couldn't stop smoothing her hair, and when she wasn't pulling on her sweater, she was straightening the pleats of her skirt. It was the first time I'd seen her dressed in anything other than pants. The hint of femininity seemed to bother her; Sophie usually sported a tomboy style, cultivating it like a wall around her.
