Lifu's book was published in the fall of 1932, soon after the Sino-Japanese War in Shanghai; and, as was to be expected, little notice was taken of it by the general public. The actual work took over two years, and the revisions and preparations for printing took about a year. Chen San gave up his army service and came back to copy the material. It took him a month to change back from handling a gun to handling the brush so that he could write with his usual neatness.
