HangChow is the city that was the capital of South China in Marco Polo's time, and of which Marco Polo wrote a glowing sketch, calling it Kinsai, meanning "capital." He described it as a great trading center, with a special quarter for Hindu and Persian traders who came from across the sea, and as a city of nine hundred bridges over intercrossing canals. He told of its situation on a lake where princes and their noble ladies bathed after the hunt. He spoke of the inhabitants as a cultured people with gentle manners, a people, however, unversed in the arts of war and held in subjection under the Great Khan. To this day, the people of the city on the lake still retain their simple ancient manners, and the city is popular as a resort for travelers and especially for young people on their honeymoons.
